The Four Rs Framework

Respect, Relevance, Reciprocity, and Responsibility guide ethical collaborative research with Indigenous communities.

The Four Rs provide a foundational framework for ethical engagement that moves beyond extractive research practices toward genuine partnership and community benefit.

Foundational Principles

Each of the Four Rs represents a fundamental shift from colonial research practices toward Indigenous-centered approaches that prioritize community authority and benefit.

Core Principles

  • Acknowledge Indigenous peoples as the first peoples of their territories
  • Recognize that Indigenous knowledge systems are complete and valid
  • Understand that cultural protocols must guide all interactions
  • Respect community decisions, including the right to say no
  • Honor the time needed for proper consultation and consent

In Practice

  • Begin all communications with appropriate territorial acknowledgments
  • Learn about specific cultural protocols before engaging
  • Use language and terminology preferred by communities
  • Respect sacred or restricted knowledge boundaries
  • Follow community-defined timelines and
    processes

Example Application

When approaching a community about research, first learn about their governance structure, cultural protocols, and current priorities. Always introduce yourself properly and explain your intentions clearly, allowing communities to determine if and how they want to engage.
